Saul Bass (1920-1996) was not only one of the great graphic designers of the mid-20th century but the undisputed master of film title design thanks to his collaborations with Alfred Hitchcock, Otto Preminger and Martin Scorsese.
Below are some examples of his film posters.
[Above] is one of my all time favorite movie posters and design pieces, Bass’ poster for Hitchcock’s Vertigo, i love the edgy aesthetic and handmade style combined with the use of pattern and typography.
[Above] Is Another of his more famous posters, this one is for Otto Preminger’s The Man with the golden arm, it keeps certain themes that bass using in all off his work, jagged lines and shapes combined with intriguing typography.
Designers still emulate this style in lots of design both print and motion nowadays, the best example is “Catch Me If You Can” openings sequence [see below]
